What tree work costs in the UK, and what actually moves the price

The figures below are national UK ranges published by price-guide sites, not a quote and not what any particular firm charges. Prices vary a great deal by region, access and species. Use them to sanity-check a number you have been given, not to predict it.

Roughly what things cost

Published UK guides put tree removal at somewhere between about £150 and £4,200 depending on size, with an average around £400. A small tree up to around 25 feet commonly lands in the low hundreds. A tree up to 50 feet is often quoted in four figures. Anything over 50 feet, or anything technically awkward, goes up from there.

Tree surgery day rates for a team are commonly quoted in the range of £400 to £1,000 a day. Stump grinding is usually a separate line, often somewhere between £60 and £400. Waste removal, where it is charged separately, commonly falls between £90 and £500.

What actually moves the price

Access is usually the biggest single factor and the one homeowners least expect. A tree that can be reached with a chipper and a truck alongside is a fundamentally different job from the same tree in a back garden reached through the house, where every piece is carried out by hand.

Then what is underneath it. A tree over open lawn can be dismantled quickly. The same tree over a conservatory, a greenhouse, a neighbour’s fence or power lines has to be roped down piece by piece, and that is time.

Size is not just height. A tree with a heavy, spreading crown is more work than a taller, narrower one. Species matters too, because dense hardwood is slower to cut and heavier to handle.

Finally, disposal. Green waste has to go somewhere and that is regulated and charged. A quote noticeably below the others is sometimes one where clearing away is not included.

Why quotes for the same tree differ so much

Usually because they are not for the same work. One may be a crown reduction and another a fell. One may include stump grinding and another leave it. One may include taking the arisings away and another leave a chip pile. Before comparing two numbers, check the two scopes match.

Things that legitimately add cost

If the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area, there is a notice or application process before work can begin, which takes time. If a tree report is needed for planning or insurance, that is professional work and is charged as such. Neither is padding.
